Giving names comprised more than one word has its own virtue. Many people using one certain name only just because it has good meaning. Take for example the common name Ahmad. If a school class has three students named Ahmad, we can easily picture the confusion that may be occurred.

Before we combine names, set up the words we want to be. Those words better have different meanings, which mean they don’t have recurred meaning. Take for example Liba Erina Ruwa. Liba means ‘the most beautiful’, Erina means ‘beautiful woman’, and Ruwa means ‘beauty’. Those three words have one common meaning, which is about being beautiful. The overall meaning of that particular combined name is too thick and has arrogant impression on people. To avoid case like this, set up one name or word which meaning is the most desired.

• Combining Names

Words to be combined don’t have to have related meanings, but it would be better if they have meanings easy enough for us to form one specific subject. Take a look at this example:

Emir Ramin Lujaini

Emir = leader

Ramin = one who saves others from hunger and suffering

Lujaini = silver

We can easily relate Ramin and Emir, which is ‘a leader who saves his people from hunger and suffering’. But how about the ‘silver’? Must we force the meaning to be ‘a leader who saves his people from hunger and suffering by giving out silver’? Or is it ‘the leader who saves his people from hunger and suffering as white as silver’?

Three words who share the same first letter or syllable don’t make much problems because parents usually have specific consideration. For example, the father whose name Rayhan and the mother whose name Raisah may want their children’s names started with the letter R. Or it is common for the first born to be named with names started with the letter A. But the simplicity of scripting and pronunciation must always be considered. Take a look at example:

Turhan Tamamul Qamar = compassion of a son who is born on the night of full moon

Now take a look at:

Tariq Taufiq Thamar = a star who’s been given guidance to success on his effort

Those two names have the same starting letter, but the latter is harder for us to remember because it contains two q and a th-.

Another example which is not recommended is Zia Zuhairi Zafar. It may has good meaning, that is ‘shining light of the champion’. But a series of letter Z continued by f may cause errors in its pronunciation.

There’s no fixed basic rules about the positioning or ordering of the words, as long as we already know beforehand the meaning word per word. But it does take some creativity to compose an overall meaning. For example, take a look at these three words:

Janna = garden

Sabina = flower

Ghaliya = fragrant

can be combined to form :

Janna Sabina Ghaliya = fragrant flower garden

Sabina Janna Ghaliya = fragrant flower in the garden

Ghaliya Janna Sabina = the fragrance of flower garden

Ghaliya Sabina Janna = the flower’s fragrance in the garden

Janna Ghaliya Sabina = fragrant garden full of flower

Sabina Ghaliya Janna = the fragrant flower in the garden

Not all words can be given meaning literally. Flower is a symbol of womanhood, although there are names for boys that implicitly mean flower(s). On some cases, flower can be translated as ‘beautiful girl’ or ‘as beautiful as flower’.

Words which mean staple foods may symbolize prosperity (such as Meshia which means ‘butter’). Lights can be related to ‘guide, guidance, director, direction or advisor’. On other case, lights can also be interpreted as ‘shiny looks or face’.
